Here is an image (from NASA) of Mars showing the grand canyon of Mars as do they call it; it is the Valles Mrineris, in which many rivers attach, such rivers coming from the west where the mountaneous region of Mars called Thalus Montes

We can see clearly the basins of many rivers attaching to this great canyon, which I think it is almost a big sea full of water and people activities on its shores and on its water.

To the west of this grand canyon of Mars, there is the mountainous area known asTharsis Montes. It includes many volcanic mountains, one of them is Olympus Mons (twice as high as Everest on Earth).
The other three mountains are:
Ascareus, Pavonis, Arsia arranged on one line.

The tops of some high mountains of Mars are covered with ice. And we can see in this picture the basins of many rivers and their tributaries that come from this mountainous area and go to the southeast: to the Valles Mrineris ?sea? of Mars

Forests near the south pole of Mars

The south pole of Mars is like the north pole of Earth:
Near the north pole of Earth we see large areas covered with forests.

Now let us see this NASA picture of the south pole of Mars (taken in the year2009): there are so many dark spots: punctate and longitudinally vertical dark spots.
